What’s in Season in October

Autumn is upon us, as the weather changes and with Halloween approaching, this month we have selected some fresh produce that will really get you in the Autumnal spirit. Find out what else is in season with our Seasonality Calendar.

Apples

It is officially harvest season! Although apples grow all year round, they are at their best in Autumn to early winter. Apples are a great easy snack and can be conveniently stored, keeping for up to 2 weeks when refrigerated. A great source of vitamins, like Vitamin C, minerals and antioxidants. This fruit can shine in so many ways - apple sauce can be a great pairing to roasted pork or as a garnish in mulled wine or hot cider plus, what's more Autumnal than an apple crumble!

Top tip: To avoid an apple browning when it is cut, squeeze some lemon juice onto it to avoid any discolouration.

Satsumas

This brightly coloured fruit will add some colour to your kitchen as they reach their peak season this month.  The sweet,  juicy texture and refreshing flavour of this fruit gives it great potential to brighten up many dishes.

This fruit gives the immune system a boost being a rich source of Vitamin C, Vitamin A, Potassium and many more. Ideal in a fruit basket within a care home setting to entice residents with a healthy snack.

Satsumas can be used in a variety of ways from baked to savoury dishes but also incorporated into drinks and sauces. Why not try and satsuma-glaze on meat dishes or satsuma flavoured cocktail, to add as seasonal twist to your menu.

Lantern or Jack Be Little Pumpkins

With Halloween upon us what better way is there to get in the spooky spirit than pumpkins! They come in a range of varieties from white to orange, large to small. They are suitable for carving and baking to add the seasonal element to your meal.

Pumpkins are very versatile and can be used within desserts, soups and salads. Surprisingly they are rich in antioxidants which give it the vibrant colour, whist also having a rich content of vitamins.
