What's in Season May

We are now well into the Spring months with the frosty weather disappearing, we see gardens beginning to flourish this month and British produce starting to take over the shelves. Here is your monthly round up of fresh British produce that is in season this May …

Strawberries

We see the first entrance of freshly harvested English strawberries. Their juicy sweet flavour and bright colour makes them a standout on any plate. Strawberries go hand in hand with being British, so be sure to see them make an appearance on menus as part of the Jubilee holiday ( 2nd-5th June). Strawberries can be perfectly incorporated into desserts such as a strawberry shortcake or cheesecake along with more savoury dishes such as burrata and balsamic glazed strawberries.

Raspberries

Raspberries make wonderful, jams, sauces and desserts. Fresh berries are now the most popular fruit item in shoppers’ baskets with raspberry consumption rising year on year, with their great health benefits playing a being a big factor in their popularity. This summer berry can be blended into morning smoothies, frozen into healthy ice lollies or baked into sweet recipes such as cakes and tarts.

Cucumber

From salads, soups and refreshing drinks. Cucumber is a surprisingly versatile ingredient, which can be incorporated well into both hot and cold dishes. Smacked cucumber makes the perfect side dish- by bruising the vegetable before cooking you are preparing it to receive all those flavours. Another essential ingredient to order ahead of the jubilee for the perfect finger sandwiches. Not to mention a must have ingredient that will be needed to help enjoy British Sandwich week (22-28 May).
